About Us

What is now the Durango Dharma Center began over 15 years ago through the inspiration of a few dedicated practitioners who came together as a small group in living rooms.  Early on, a Board of Directors was formed who established the "Durango Sangha" as a 501(c)3. The Board, with constantly evolving membership is going strong to this day.  In 1999, the Durango Sangha had outgrown living rooms and began to meet in a rented space at the Rocky Mountain Retreat Center on Third Avenue in Durango.  In around 2005, the Durango Dharma Center (DDC) came into being with a dedicated space in it's current location on Colorado Avenue.

The DDC in it's new incarnation was made possible solely by the generosity of it's members, both in terms of dollars as well as sweat equity.

At around the same time, a group of leaders emerged and formed the Community Dharma Leader Council (CDLC).  While the Board of Directors is responsible for the business dealings and operational aspects of the DDC, the CDLC is responsible for the overall spiritual guidance of the center, the Monday talk schedule and the programs offered.
